這部電影根據(jù)真實故事改編，講述了摩根和羅德尼·梅澤爾的故事，他們是青梅竹馬，摩根 21 歲時結婚。這對夫婦的第一個孩子出生后不久就去世了，但一年后他們有了雙胞胎，他們欣喜若狂。當羅德尼失業(yè)并負債累累時，他們之間的關系開始緊張起來。羅德尼把他們的爭吵歸咎于摩根的酗酒——即使她只喝過一次酒——并說服摩根，是她在昏厥憤怒中把他推下樓梯的。這對夫婦最終分居，摩根的生活開始好轉，直到羅德尼被診斷出患有癌癥。不久之后，一個蒙面入侵者闖入摩根家并襲擊了她。入侵者離開幾分鐘后羅德尼就出現(xiàn)了；當當局詢問他時，羅德尼的故事似乎說不通。羅德尼真的得了癌癥嗎？他是他自稱的英雄嗎？還是他幾十年來一直在欺騙摩根？
